Boulevard Trees Blog

Introducing: Boulevard Trees!

Why are trees planted in front of my house, in medians, and in other locations in my community?

The boulevard is part of your municipality’s road right-of-way (ROW), and may include:

  • The area between the property line and the sidewalk, or sidewalk not separated by a sidewalk or pathway
  • The area between the sidewalk and the curb
  • The area separating roadway lanes, such as medians and islands
  • The greenspace adjacent to closed/gated roads/lanes
  • The area within traffic circles and roundabouts

The residential boulevard is a shared public space. The boulevard also contains underground utilities. The municipality and other utility companies may require access to the boulevard to maintain utilities, repair or replace sidewalks, prune boulevard trees, or install street signs.

You can find out more about City of Calgary boulevards here: https://www.calgary.ca/content/dam/www/pda/pd/documents/calgary-eats/residential-boulevard-garden-guidelines.pdf

These boulevard trees are designed to create additional beauty and value for your community both today and in the future.

We (Qualico Communities Calgary) partner with our contractors to plant an array of beautiful deciduous trees in our communities to enhance the quality of life in your neighbourhood. These trees are planted in accordance with the Community Planting plan prior to development. These boulevards and medians are property of your municipality, and so all trees growing on the boulevard belong to the municipality. This prohibits actions such as:

  • Cutting, removing, moving or pruning City trees
  • Penetrating the bark or attaching any object or sign to City trees
  • Planting trees on City land; and
  • Spraying trees with any substance except water

If you notice that a tree is dying, please contact Calgary Communities Customer Care (customercare@qualicocommunities.com). If the area of your community has been turned over to your municipality, you will need to contact them directly for tree care. You can find out more information here:

Why didn’t my property get a tree?

Some boulevard sections are unable to receive trees due to utility conflicts. As the boulevard does serve as part of your municipality’s road right-of-way (ROW), this means there are underground utilities and need to be kept clear in order to remain accessible for maintenance. Please review your property plot plan for more information on where there may be other ROWs on your property.

Other public trees that you can anticipate are:

  • Trees beside the pathways you walk and bike on
  • Tree in parks next to ponds and park benches

Please find resources to different municipality public tree care policies at the following links:

Planting or Adding Trees on your Property

You are more than welcome to add any additional trees or shrubs within your property line. Before you dig or excavate in your yard, please contact Alberta One Call and Dig Shaw to ensure you know the location of any underground utilities.

Municipal Bylaws require that all trees are planted outside of any Right of Way (ROW). Right of Ways are areas in to allow utility line(s) to be installed and maintained on, over or under privately-owned lands. Please review your property plot plan for information on any ROW on your property.

Boulevard Trees

Qualico Communities Calgary, in partnership with our contractors, plant a variety of deciduous tree species on the boulevards and medians within our Communities. These trees are planted in accordance with the Community Planting Plan agreed upon prior to development with the municipality. These boulevards and medians are property of your municipality, and all trees growing on the boulevard belong to the municipality. This prohibits actions such as:

  • Cutting, removing, moving or pruning City trees;
  • Penetrating the bark or attaching any object or sign to City trees;
  • Planting trees on City land; and
  • Spraying trees with any substance except water.

These boulevards, medians, and trees are property of the City of Calgary or municipality. In the case where a tree is unable to be planted due to an on-site conflict, the City or municipality will determine how this is addressed, or if and where it would be relocated.

Qualico Communities Calgary is happy to provide all new residents with two potted trees for their yard as well as work with MUNICIPALITY to plant trees in parks, green spaces and boulevard in all our Communities.

These trees are planted in accordance with the Community Planting Plan agreed upon prior to development with the

City of Calgary. These boulevards and medians are property of the City of Calgary, and all trees growing on the
